Gold Prospector ("we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your information when you use the Gold Prospector mobile application ("App"). We believe your personal data belongs to you — not to us.
1. Our Core Privacy Commitments
We make the following commitments to every Gold Prospector user:
- We do not sell your personal data to anyone, ever
- We do not share your data with advertisers or data brokers
- We do not use your data to serve targeted advertising
- We do not share your location data with third parties
- Your gold find locations, map pins, and prospecting data belong exclusively to you
- You can delete your account and all associated data at any time
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Information You Provide
When you create an account and use the App, you may provide:
- Account information: email address, username, and password
- Profile information: display name, profile photo, bio, and privacy preferences
- Gold find data: amounts, locations, dates, and notes you log
- Map pins: locations and notes you save on the map
- Community content: posts, photos, captions, comments, and direct messages
- Trail tracking data: GPS coordinates recorded when you enable trail tracking
- Terrain analysis photos and chatbot prompts submitted for AI processing
- Gamification activity: XP earned, badges unlocked, login streaks, and daily action counters
- Reports: content you flag as violating our guidelines (the report itself, not your identity, is reviewed)
2.2 Location Information
The App requests access to your device's location solely to:
- Display your current position on the map
- Allow you to log gold finds at your current GPS coordinates
- Enable trail tracking when you explicitly activate it
- Optionally record your trail in the background when your screen is off (only when you turn this on)
Your location is processed on your device and used only to provide these in-app features. Background location tracking is opt-in, runs only when you have enabled it, and stops as soon as you turn it off. We do not continuously track your location, store your location history on our servers beyond what you explicitly log, or share your location with any third party.
2.3 Automatically Collected Information
When you use the App, we may automatically collect limited technical information necessary for the App to function, including:
- Device type and operating system version (for compatibility)
- App version (for support and troubleshooting)
- Crash reports and error logs (to fix bugs)
This information is used solely for app maintenance and improvement and is never linked to your identity for advertising purposes.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect exclusively to:
- Create and maintain your account
- Provide, operate, and improve the App's features
- Display your content to you and, where you choose to share it, to the community
- Process your gold find logs and display them on your profile
- Enable community features such as following, messaging, and post interactions
- Send you notifications about activity on your account (e.g. likes, comments, follow requests)
- Respond to your support requests
- Ensure the security and integrity of the App
We do not use your information for any other purpose without your explicit consent.
4. Information Sharing and Disclosure
4.1 We Do Not Sell Your Data
We will never sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for commercial purposes.
4.2 No Advertising Networks
We do not integrate advertising networks, tracking pixels, or behavioral advertising technology into the App. You will never be targeted with ads based on your activity in Gold Prospector.
4.3 Service Providers
We use a limited number of trusted third-party service providers to help operate the App. These providers process your data only on our behalf and under strict confidentiality obligations:
- Supabase (database, authentication, file storage, and serverless functions, United States)
- Mapbox (map rendering, geocoding, and offline tile services)
- OpenAI (AI terrain analysis, GoldBot chatbot, and automated content moderation — submitted content is processed for the immediate response only and is not retained or used to train models)
- Apple (app distribution via the App Store and TestFlight; subscription processing if you subscribe to Gold Prospector Pro — Apple does not share your payment details with us)
Each of these providers maintains their own privacy practices and we encourage you to review them.
4.4 Legal Requirements
We may disclose your information if required to do so by law, or in response to valid requests from public authorities (e.g., a court order or government agency), only to the extent required and after making reasonable efforts to notify you where permitted.
4.5 Public Community Content
Content you choose to post publicly in the community feed (posts, comments) is visible to other users of the App. Gold finds, map pins, and location data you log are private by default and are never publicly visible unless you explicitly choose to share them.
5. Automated Content Moderation
5.1 The App uses automated content moderation to scan posts, comments, direct messages, profile pictures, and uploaded post photos. This is done through OpenAI's content moderation service.
5.2 The moderation system checks for content that violates our Terms of Service or Community Guidelines, including hate speech, harassment, threats of violence, sexual content, content sexualizing minors, and other prohibited material.
5.3 Content that is flagged as violating our guidelines may be blocked from being posted or removed from public view. Repeated violations may result in account suspension or termination.
5.4 We do not perform human review of your content unless it is specifically reported by another user. Reports are reviewed manually to determine whether action is warranted.
5.5 Submitted content is processed for moderation only and is not retained, shared, or used for any other purpose.
6. Data Storage and Security
6.1 Your data is stored securely using Supabase infrastructure, which employs industry-standard encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest.
6.2 We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction.
6.3 While we take security seriously and implement reasonable safeguards, no method of electronic storage or transmission over the internet is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.
6.4 Your data is stored in the United States. If you are accessing the App from outside the United States, you consent to the transfer of your information to the United States.
7. Your Privacy Rights and Controls
You have meaningful control over your data:
Access and Correction
You can view and update your profile information at any time through the App.
Content Deletion
You can delete individual posts, gold finds, map pins, and other content you have created at any time through the App.
Account Deletion
You can permanently delete your account and all associated data through Settings → Delete Account. Upon deletion, your personal information, posts, gold finds, map pins, messages, and all other user-generated content will be permanently removed from our systems within 30 days. Some information may be retained in encrypted backup logs for up to 90 days before being permanently purged.
Private Profile
You can set your profile to private in Settings, which limits visibility of your community posts to approved followers only.
Location Services
You can disable location access for the App at any time through your device's Settings. Certain location-dependent features will not function without location access, but the App remains usable.
8. Children's Privacy
The App is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child under 13 without parental consent, we will take steps to delete that information promptly. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us immediately.
9. Third-Party Map and Data Services
The App displays mapping data from Mapbox, public land data from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and U.S. Forest Service (USFS), and mine data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). These are government and licensed commercial data sources. Your interaction with map features is governed by Mapbox's privacy policy in addition to ours. We do not share your personal information with these data sources.
10. News and External Links
The App aggregates publicly available news content from Google News RSS feeds. When you tap on a news article, you are directed to an external website. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of external websites. We recommend reviewing the privacy policy of any external site you visit.
11. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or applicable law. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy within the App and updating the "Last Updated" date at the top of this policy. Your continued use of the App after the effective date of any changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically.
